Cleaning fur scarves and coats
In
order to get the most out of your investment, you will want to take
every step recommended for keeping your fur jackets and accessories
properly cleaned.
Fur scarves
and other items should be cleaned regularly, about once a year. This
keeps the hairs conditioned and looking good. Even if they are not worn
that year, this is a recommended practice because the furrier will
inspect for minor repairs that will help towards your overall
maintenance. Think of it as the yearly doctor's visit, only for your
valuable fur clothing items.
To keep your fur scarves
and such from becoming smelly and rancid, do not spray perfume or
hairspray near them. Perfume can also cause the animal pelt to become
dry due to the alcohol in it. If you wear perfume or hairspray, be sure
to spritz yourself before putting on the jacket and not while you are
wearing it.
If your fur gets wet, simply shake it out
and let it dry in an open place naturally. Do not use a hairdryer or
try and brush it because that will ruin the pelt. Take it to your
furrier if it is completely drenched, though.
Storing fur jackets
Keep your pelts away from light, heat, and fumes when storing them. Fur jackets
are best kept in a breathable area, so don't keep them sealed up in a
garment bag. This could cause the leather side of the pelt to dry out.
If you must keep it in a hanging bag, be sure it is one that gets air
circulation like a cloth woven one.
Hang your coats on a
wide, curved, padded hanger. Never use a wire hanger to store your
precious jacket. It could cause permanent reshaping of the shoulders.
Never place items like luggage on top of your coat, because over time, that could cause the fur to mat.
